Hump Day Hook #12

And Now for Something Completely Different...

Welcome to the Hump Day Hook Hop for January 23rd, 2013! With this blog hop, each author posts one(ish) paragraph from a WIP or finished book for all to see and - we hope! - leave a comment...

I realize my previous eleven Hump Day Hooks have all been from my current work in progress, Dearest Bloodiest Elizabeth, the sequel to Pulse and Prejudice, the vampire adaptation of the Austen classic.  The 7/7/7 meme that's been going around forced me to dig up another (completely unedited) manuscript I have in the pipeline, so I thought I would share a taste of it if for no other reason than to demonstrate that I do write novels wholly unrelated to Pride and Prejudice! (Also, I have had some complaints from fans of Pulse who have avoided the weekly samples of its sequel because of the fear of "spoilers.")

In this scene from Untitled, our hero has driven our heroine home because she had a few too many margaritas...

He took off his seat belt then reached over and unlatched hers.  Leaning over, he stared into her inebriated face and stroked her hair gently. “How do you feel?” he asked, his voice low and soft as he twisted a tendril around his finger.
She said nothing of the tingling sensation coursing through her body. Instead, she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer.  “You tell me.”
“I think you feel drunk,” he said, still in a murmur.
She smiled at him, her heavy eyes at half-mast. “Aren’t you going to kiss me?”
“No,” he said simply, drawing his fingers down her face in a sensual caress that sent a shiver rushing over her.
Their faces three inches apart, her heart raced even as her breath became slow and heavy, matching his. “Don’t you want to kiss me?”
He leaned his forehead against hers and closed his eyes, then, placing his hand on the back of her head, he pushed his fingers into her hair with an unyielding grip. “You know I do, but not like this. Not when you can use tequila as a reason or an excuse. I want our first kiss to be when you are stone sober, when you want it, you’ll feel it, and you’ll remember it.”

And so, dear readers, what do you think? Would you be willing to jump genres with me?
If you want a bit more, read Page 7 here. Oh, and by the way - this is not a romance novel...

UPDATE:  Since so many have asked about the genre, I would classify it as Metaphysical Fiction
 - perhaps a metaphysical romance? - so nothing is quite what one might expect.

  1. Not a romance novel?! What other kind of novel is there? lol jk

You have my attention for sure, though it's harder to get a feel for it vs the P&P/DBE snips where we know who we're dealing with. He seems gentlemanly, not wanting just a drunk hookup.

I love the last 2 lines of the page 7 excerpt - swoonworthy!

  2. Aww, this is so sweet! A man who wants his girl to remember their first kiss instead of just wanting to get in her pants. Where are the rest of them hiding, I wonder... Anyway, great hook! I would be willing to jump genres, but I'm curious as to what genre it is if not romance.

(Just in case my name doesn't show up, it's Jade Crystal. Blogspot doesn't like to display it that way for some reason *shrugs*)

  3. I LOVE jumping genres!! I'm a genre whore...hehe. I write horror and romance and UF and...yeah, I'm all over the place...

That being said, I ADORE this scene. OMG I wanted him to kiss her...but I love his reason for not doing it!

  7. I like this fellow...but, not a romance? But there's romance in the story, right? With a sensitive, caring guy like this, there's got to be some love!

  11. Thanks for the comments, everyone! Glad to see I got you "hooked"!

As for genres, I would classify it as Metaphysical Fiction - perhaps a metaphysical romance? - so nothing is quite what one might expect.
