Hump Day Hook 13: Did I Really Write This?

Welcome to the Hump Day Hook Hop for January 30th, 2013! With this blog hop, each author posts one(ish) paragraph from a WIP or finished book for all to see and - we hope! - leave a comment...

Do other authors experience this? With All My Tomorrows being in the spotlight recently, I decided to pull it out the other night just before bed; and I swear it was as if I had not even written it!  I found myself really getting into it (not like I didn't know what was going to happen).

So, even if you've already read All My Tomorrows, I hope you will enjoy this little excerpt....

Alice turned to leave the dance floor and stopped just short of walking into Peter. Before she understood what was happening, he had taken her hands and tugged her toward him.
   “Where’s Winnie?” she asked.
He furrowed his brow and peered at her through squinted eyes. “Why would she be here?”
He stepped forward as she resisted. “I’ve been dancing – I’m all sweaty.” She was, too. Her blouse clung to her chest, and her scalp was drenched.
“So am I.” He traced her face with his eyes and pulled her into his arms.
Her arms were trapped against his damp chest, so she had no choice but to circle them around his neck; but that only brought their bodies closer. They barely moved, their feet somehow turning them in a sluggish rotation, reminding her of slow dancing in high school. A tingly numbness enveloped her. She surrendered to it and laid her head against his shoulder, and he tightened his hold.....

Oooooh...and I just love what happens next!

  1. Well, that certainly left me hanging! Ending an excerpt with an ellipsis is just evil (just kidding *winks*). Great hook!

  6. You created a really believable scene when "...her blouse clung to her chest, and her scalp was drenched." I liked the hero immediately when he matched her sweat for sweat and pulled her into the dance. Great snippet!

  7. Well at least they are both sweaty! Very nice.

  8. Oh, you tease...lol. Great hook!

And I do the same thing. As I'm "editing" my books 2&3 for submission I keep finding myself getting lost in the story and forgetting to actually edit. lol.

  9. That's a tease... not a hook! We all want to know what happens next, especially because you said you love it!

And, yes, when I go back to edit, I think to myself sometimes "Wow. This is good. I can't believe I wrote this. I get so into it, I can't stop reading."

    1. Well, sometimes I'll read something from a loooooong time ago and think, "Wow, this is horrible! I can't believe I wrote this!"

    1. I'll tell you that: Winnie was the woman with Peter in the scandal that broke up his marriage and was plastered all over the tabloids. He's a renowned womanizer.
