Hump Day Hook #7

Welcome to the Hump Day Hook Hop for 12/12/12!

With this blog hop, each author posts one paragraph from a WIP or finished book for all to see. Then, it would be really cool if you could visit all the writers participating and comment on their paragraph!

This excerpt is from my current work in progress, Dearest Bloodiest Elizabeth, the sequel to Pulse and Prejudice, the vampire adaptation of Jane Austen's classic love story.  Several familiar faces in this excerpt....

A blood-curdling scream echoed through the house and reverberated off the panes in the windows.  Darcy and Bingley exchanged wide-eyed looks while Mary Bennet turned from her book and glanced up at the ceiling.  As the screams died down, a frowning Mr. Bennet walked into the parlor wiping his glasses with a cloth and looked between the visibly shaken gentlemen. “Fret not,” he said, forcing his features to relax, but his eyes were edged in anxiety.  “I have long said that women are the stronger sex, and that is why childbearing is left to them.  Were men given that office, our species would have long since died out.”  His words belied the angst evident in his accent.
Before any of the others could respond, another crying scream from above shook the room.

Love to know what you think!

Thanks for stopping by! Hop on over to the other authors' sites for their hooks.

  3. It was a great hook to read. For half of the paragraph I thought there was something completely different happening upstairs, considering it's from a vampire novel, and then I had to smile when the reason for the screams was revealed. And Bennet's lines are great!

  4. Great job! And no, men would never survive being pregnant much less actually giving birth. Nice hook.

  7. Correct-o, Mr Bennet! (says this woman who's never had a baby lol). I can stick up for my gender, right?

Great hook - I wonder if it's Lizzy or Jane having a baby.
