Changing Tracks with Sarah Cass

Coffee with ColetteGood morning, dear readers! I hope this week finds you all happy and highly caffeinated! This week on Coffee with Colette, I am joined by fellow Secret Cravings Publishing author Sarah Cass; but I warn you, she loves to tease us with her prose and leave us hanging! She has a special knack for keeping us in suspense and wanting more. Once you begin her Dominion Falls Series, you'll be dying to get your hands on the next one!                                          ~Colette

Right Off The Cliff…Hanger

I have a sickness.

I’m a hopeless tease.

I play with your emotions.

I leave you hanging.

For my Dominion Falls Series – at the end of Book 1 (Changing Tracks) you are left with not one, but at least three cliffhangers.

I wanted to leave my readers with more – including a possible tragic one – but my publisher said "No dice!" and I had to wrap up at least one of the cliffhangers.  Apparently I take my desire to leave readers wanting more just a little bit too far.  Once I realized that, I had to change the ending of Book 2 (Derailed) as well.  As much as it physically pained me, I had to leave the shocker of an ending behind and add it to the original start of Book 3 (Dark Territory).

One thing I can, and always do, promise—is that I’m a sucker for the Happily Ever After. I may put my characters through hell, and drag your emotions right along with them, but I always will get you to the happy ending . . . eventually.

Blurb:

There’s nothing simple about forgetting your past.

Cole Mitchell runs the busiest saloon and brothel in Dominion Falls. He keeps his women at a distance, unwilling to relive a past he worked hard to forget.

Until the night Jane Doe falls into his saloon bleeding and near death.  She wakes with no memory, only the firm belief someone tried to kill her. In the strange world of amnesia she manages to find solace in Cole’s arms and he finds home in hers.

While they work together to solve the mystery of her appearance, their pasts – her lack of, and his buried – build a barrier between them.

To make matters worse, Jane’s past isn’t willing to let her go. A stranger proves he’ll kill to keep his secrets safe. With those she loves in danger, Jane’s errant memory is all that stands between them and death.  Cole can only do so much to protect her, will it be enough?

 Excerpt:

“Whatever happened to you, you were still bleedin’.” He crouched down, waiting for her to follow suit before pointing to a blood-splattered rock. “Common sense says it might’ve been an animal, but this is the same trail we been following, so I’m guessing it was you.”
“Guess it’s good it’s been dry. This would all be gone, wouldn’t it?”
Cole stood and helped her to her feet. He pointed through the trees. “Trail ain’t moved. You came due west. I ain’t gonna be far behind. Take your time.”
Despite wanting his assistance, she’d hoped for some time alone. A bit breathless, she shook her head. “How did you-,”
“Just figured I’d wanna be alone if it were me. We ain’t got much time ‘til we need to eat. Guess I can let you have it. I’m staying close just in case. Renegades and all.”
“Thank you, Cole.” At his nod, she turned, heading in the direction he’d indicated. Moving through the trees, her throat closed up as the fear and confusion started to fill her again. Without the distraction of conversation, reality became suffocating.
She pushed on through, hoping it would lead her to the answers. Every step felt weighed down until she sank to her knees half an hour later. Her head dropped, her shoulders sagged, and she found herself whispering a quiet prayer.
Cole’s hands closed around her arms. “Up you go. Let’s get some food.”
“Just a little farther. I feel like I’m so close.”
     “Do ya really?”
“No.” Her shoulders dropped as she let him lead her away. One last glance over her shoulder made her stop. “Wait. What’s that?”

     “What’s what? Jane. Wait.”
She moved forward. “What—what is that?”
His hands rested on her shoulder and pulled her back against him. “It was a horse. Looks like it dropped a couple weeks back. Picked clean.”
“A horse.” She scanned the remains in front of her, a sick feeling rising in her stomach. Cole moved around the carcass to grab the saddlebag. She could see his mouth moving but heard nothing. Her eyes closed, her heart raced.
Buzzing filled her ears as panic started to take hold. Images flickered behind her eyelids, shadowy and dark, horror lifting the hair on the back of her neck. Nothing clear, nothing solid, but the feelings threatened to overpower her. “I stole it.”
Cole stopped short. “You stole the horse? Jane, that’s a hanging offense.”

About Sarah

Sarah Cass’s world is regularly turned upside down by her three special-needs kids and loving mate, so she breaks genre barriers, dabbling in horror, straight fiction, and urban fantasy. An ADD tendency leaves her with a variety of interests that include singing, dancing, crafting, cooking, and being a photographer. She fights through the struggles of the day, knowing the battles are her crucible and though she may emerge scarred, she’s also stronger. Changing Tracks is her debut novel, but she’s already ahead of the game with another novel set for release in April. While busy creating worlds and characters as real to her as her own family, she leads an active online life with her blog, Redefining Perfect, which gives a real and sometimes raw glimpse into her life and art.
