DESIRES' SECRETS from Holly Jody Gill

Coffee with ColetteGood morning, dear readers!
And happy holidays! We are having a special Monday edition of Coffee with Colette this week ahead of Christmas Eve, and as I will be devoting most of the next two weeks completing TWO novels, I will not have any guests again until January 7th, 2014, as I must tear myself away from social media so as not to be distracted by - oh, was that a dragonfly?
What better way to end the year than with fan-favorite, fellow Secret Cravings Publishing author Holly Jody Gill!
Just as I had wished when she last joined me in July, Holly is back to tell you about the Third Volume in her Desires series, Desires' Secrets! Holly first stopped by in March to introduce Volume One: Desires, then this summer returned with Volume Two: Touching Angel's Desires,  so be sure to check out those guest spots if you missed them or need to refresh your memory.
As always, Holly has brought you two excerpts: one in mild and another in extra spicy! That's the way to heat up your holidays!
~Colette

Thank you, Colette, for having me here for coffee and biscuits this morning! Today I would love to talk about my new book, Desires' Secrets - Book 3 of the Desires series.

Two and a half years after her first visit to Desires, Stacie Clifford’s life has done a 180. Settled and happy with her beloved Dan, baby Ryan has completed their lives.

When Dan suggests revisiting Desires for some sexy couple time away, Stacie is unaccountably cautious until she finds that Angel will not be there. She didn’t know why, but she always had a gut feeling that Angel was not to be trusted. With Angel out of the way, she and Dan, together with their good friends Jason and Chrissie, proceed to indulge in the many and varied delights of Desires. Stacie even decides to explore some of her own secret fantasies.

But events soon take a dramatic turn, threatening to shatter Stacie’s new, happy life. What secrets lurk inside the walls of Desires?

They stood outside a door with a plaque saying, “Paradise Room.” Stacie was intrigued, wondering what hid behind the large wooden door. Jason inserted the key in the lock and the door opened. The guys stood back, allowing the girls to enter first. Stacie gaped at the stunning room. Two king-sized beds took centre stage, with large canopies hanging down off the ceiling. Spotlights shone down from the ceiling, reflecting off the diamante-spattered voiles, casting little sparkles round the room. The beds were covered in cream and gold cushions, with cream broderie anglaise duvet covers.
Farther back in the room, there were large cream leather chairs and light wooden tables. The whole room was elegantly decorated, giving it a light, airy, very calming feel.
In between the beds and the seating area, a huge indoor fountain played, the water overflowing from the upper smaller bowl into the large lower one. A large sculpture consisting of cherubs at play sat in the centre of the upper bowl—one of the cherubs held a jug from which the water poured. The bowls were lit from beneath with spotlights and the water sparkled.
“This is gorgeous,” Chrissie said, stepping farther into the room. Stacie watched Chrissie head to the other side of the room, Jason following her. From behind Stacie, Dan wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close.
“What do you think, baby?” he whispered in her right ear, his breath heating her face.
“It’s stunning.”
He moved her hair away from her neck and pressed his lips against her skin. Her legs weakened and she closed her eyes.

Maria Grace and the Tale of a Recalcitrant Muse

Coffee with ColetteGood morning, dear readers!

I always love having this fellow Austen Variations Author  join me for Coffee because I have the chance to get to know her better. My guest today is the beautiful Maria Grace, who stopped by for a Coffee visit in April to talk about her novels, her blackbelt (!), and hummingbirds. Chatting together, we find that we have more in common than we knew.  She and I are both Southern girls, and we had similar upbringings over which we can empathize!  Also, as followers of my Facebook page know, I have been suffering with a bout of writer's block, and like Maria, I have tried returning to pen and paper to get the creative juices flowing. I am inspired by her ability to break through the block - I only hope I don't have to run 50 miles to do it! (That's not happening!)
Of course, we also share a love of all things Darcy!  Maria is back today to tell us where that hummingbird has led her next, and I know you will want to follow along (and you won't have to run 50 miles!).

Tale of a Recalcitrant Muse

Colibri-thalassinus-001-edit
A muse is a fickle creature, very very fickle creature. On good days, mine looks like a lovely, colorful humming bird, flitting from one sweet flower to the next, leading me along my storyline. Then there are other days, the days when it looks more like this:

Osiol001xx There is a reason donkeys are known for their stubbornness. One of my horse-owning friends told me about transporting her horse in the same trailer as a donkey. When it was time for the animals to leave the trailer, the donkey got stubborn and refused to leave. They finally had to hook up a winch to the determined creature to get him to move.

My muse morphed into a donkey for the longest time with my most recent book and I nearly needed a winch to get it moving again. Since I edited the basic plot line from the third book in my series, I already had a good sense of what was going to happen. It was just a matter of deciding exactly how it would take place.

The Christmas holidays seemed like a natural timeframe for the story line. That decision made, I was ready to go. This shouldn’t be too difficult, do a bit of period research and we’re ready to go. Right?

If only it were that easy.

A little research wound up as over twenty pages of dense typewritten notes. That was just to start with. Another twenty or more pages of notes got added in a long the way. Once I had the research done, more or less, I had a wonderful idea. Set the story line up by the Regency holiday calendar. That will give me a good solid structure to work from. Right? Certainly it would.

Yeah—not so much.

I started writing the story form the eyes of the characters at Pemberley. That attempt died in the water after 10 pages. All right muse, I can be flexible. I started over, in a new point of view, from the eyes of the Longbourn characters. That was good for maybe another ten pages, then nothing. I just stared at blank pages. A lot.

Maybe if I returned to pen and paper—skip the computer for a bit? I hoped the muse could be bribed with a comfy chair, a warm blanket and a cuddly cat or three. That effort only merited a handful of pages.

DunkyBribing with chocolate did not work, either—it was lovely fun though. But it gave me an idea. How about ditching the calendar idea and make it about a journey to visit Pemberley. That had potential!

Back to research—maps, period documents on the towns and sites along the way, all about carriages and posting inns. Things were looking good. Storyline would conform to the travel from point A to point B and fall in love along the way.

Ready, set, write…or not.

Argh! I’m not sure I even got five pages out of that idea before it was dead in the water.

I was ready to give up and would have, except for one teensy-tiny little problem. I’d already posted the intro as a guest post on a large book blog and promised a Christmas book to go with it back in May. I was stuck. I had to make peace with this foolish, mulish muse somehow.

Colibrí Cola de Oro (Golden-tailed Sapphire Hummingbird) Bigger FileA peace offering? It required a peace offering and I knew exactly what it would be. My outlines! The research I could keep, but the muse demanded the outlines. So page by page I fed those dreaded outlines to my donkey-stubborn muse. Wonder of Wonders—it morphed back into a humming bird!

I strapped on my running shoes and followed it—literally. I ran probably 50 miles in the course of sorting out the story. I wrote, I rant and I wrote some more, and the story took shape. Plot points fell into place exactly there they should, a theme appeared and a character arc developed, and best of all—a twist ending I didn’t see coming until I actually wrote it. I love my humming bird!

That is not to say it didn’t require a month of editing and polishing when it was finished, it did. But at last I finally had a story!

And I think I’ve learned my lesson. I would much rather have this face:

Thalurania glaucopis, São Paulo, Brazil - 20060514

to write by than this one:

Donkeys (2)

Here’s a little excerpts of where my humming bird led me....

Twelfth Night at Longbourn

Twelfth Night at LongbournThe journey to Bond Street was a quick one—so easy a distance Kitty would have never thought to ask for the carriage. Perhaps one did not walk easy distances in London. She opened her mouth, the question poised on her lips. Miss Darcy raised an eyebrow, and she clamped her jaws shut.
The carriage slowed in a sea of city life. Odors from the busy street wafted in: horses and their waste; smoke—coal, wood and tobacco; cooking food of too many types to identify. More traffic than she had ever encountered jostled for space between the carriages and wagons. How did one breathe in such chaos?
Kitty clutched her skirts, crushing the muslin under her hands. So very many people: beggars in rags, little boys sporting skeleton suits; a dandy, dressed after the manner of Beau Brummel, stood on the corner. The lady on his arm might well have been a fashion plate from La Belle Assemble. They both dodged a

Undressing Mr. Darcy with Karen Doornebos! (and you can win!)

Coffee with ColetteGood morning, my dear readers!
I admit, I have been a bad blogger as of late.  Last year I received one of those "Very Inspiring Blogger" awards. Now I should get a "Very Terrible Blogger" Raspberry. Fans of my Facebook Page follow the daily drama that is my life - although my mother-in-law says I primarily bitch about my day job and talk about drinking wine (I told her the two are not unrelated!). I even got my blog date for Austen Authors confused and had to  post something late and fast. I was dreadfully disappointed, too, because I thought my date was December 7th, and I was going to blog about the death of John Lennon on December 8th, 1980; but I suppose that has nothing to do with Jane Austen anyway! (I bet I could have found some sort of tie in...)

Through it all, one Austen Author, who I cannot believe to this day even knows I exist, has been amazingly gracious. Words cannot express how thrilled I am to host the gorgeous and talented Karen Doorenbos for Coffee this morning - and I'm supposed to be a writer! OK - I guess the word would have to be ineffable. I became a fan of hers a few years ago with Definitely Not Mr. Darcy, and now she is here to introduce her latest release, Undressing Mr. Darcy - and who hasn't wanted to do that? Why do you think I wrote my own variation (with Colin Firth in my mind - oh my! - the whole time)? PLUS if you leave a comment below, you could win a copy of this tantalizing title and be entered for a special Grand Prize! So grab your double espresso or your skinny grande pumpkin latté and join me as I visit with someone I hope to call a friend...

UNDRESSING MR. DARCY – Blog Tour & Giveaway

Hello from the Pump Room in Bath!

As an ice-breaker to each leg of my Blog Tour for UNDRESSING MR. DARCY, I’m taking you along for a ride to England, where I traveled during the summer of 2012 to do some research for the book.

Where am I on this stop? The gorgeous Pump Room in Bath where, once my heroine touches ground in England, she stops daily to “take the waters.” You can see the gorgeous pump here, enhanced with fish—their mouths open. The pump sits in a gorgeous solarium in the Pump Room where visitors can have high tea. A trio plays classical music, and, although the photo is dark, you can see the shape of the fabulous windows topped with a “fan”
window. The room is stunning and I had to set a couple of scenes here, didn’t I?

The water, by the way, was warm and tasted of various minerals—an acquired taste—but I liked it and it only cost 50 pence. The Pump Room also happens to be the place where the climactic scene in UNDRESSING MR. DARCY takes place. Speaking of daily beverages…

Thank you, Colette, for the coffee…

Without further ado, I want to thank my fellow Austen Author, Colette, for having me over for coffee today. So nice of her. I take my coffee: seriously! I couldn’t have written either of my books without it! I’m a huge coffee drinker, enjoying everything from a regular cup of Joe to cappuccinos and complicated lattes. My usual latte is a non-fat, decaf latte—the largest possible. When I order it I usually tell the barista it’s my “cup of nothing.” My teenage son just told me that the latest research shows that latte drinkers go out of their way to please others…well…I certainly hope my latest book UNDRESSING MR. DARCY pleases! I might add that I drink tea too, sometimes as a chaser to my coffee…but all of this is just to keep me from eating chocolate while I write. My heroine loves coffee too. The question is: does falling for a Brit open up her vistas to tea?

What’s all this about Undressing?

I have two men in my new book. One of them happens to come to the states to do his Undressing Mr. Darcy show to help sell his book and save his crumbling estate. He lectures about each article of clothing on stage as he proceeds to take it off—down to his drawers. Sound intriguing?

The other man in the book is a pirate. Well, not a real pirate, but a modern guy who, in his spare time, does some pirate reenacting. Did I mention he looks a lot like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Carribean?

My heroine, despite her addiction to her social media, gets caught up between these two…characters…and finds herself surprisingly swept away by the old-fashioned
