Misha Tagliaferro on Staying True to her Characters

Coffee with ColetteGood morning, dear readers!

This week on Coffee with Colette, the gorgeous and talented Secret Cravings Publishing author  Misha Tagliaferro has dropped by to tell you about how she stays true to her characters in her two Paranormal Romances - Tara of the Fey and Thirst for Love. I just can't wait for you to hear about these two sexy thrillers! Having written a vampire novel myself (and with one in progress), you know anything that has the pulses pounding and the blood flowing will have me turning the pages!

Staying True to Your Characters

One of the most common questions an author receives is, “Where do you get the ideas for your stories?” The answers to that question vary, but many people believe authors base their characters on people in their lives. While this may be true in some cases, at least to a certain extent, my characters and plots are the figment of my imagination.

I write paranormal romance. The characters by their very nature require a great deal of imagination. Yes, I draw on what I know of human behavior and psychology to create my characters, but that knowledge only goes so far. The characters’ personalities take over and their unique dilemmas demand to be handled in a way true to them. When you’re writing a vampire or fey, you have to look beyond the human dilemmas and thoughts to the paranormal side of things.

Trying to think like a vampire can be a challenge, as I found out when I wrote Thirst for Love. After all, how would you feel if you were hundreds of years old and had to rely on drinking blood to stay alive? Putting myself into those shoes and trying to see the world through vampire eyes was a unique experience, to say the least. It was also an exercise in creativity that helped me grow as a writer and think outside the box.

With Tara of the Fey, I decided to go with a different type of mythological being. In some

What Can I Say?

Jane Austen's Writing Environment
When I began researching and writing Pulse and Prejudice, I stopped cooking and cleaning. You see, I have what in the world of the arts is known as a “day job” (as in “Don’t quit your..."). Until I am able to live my dream of being a writer by profession, I work forty to fifty hours a week at said “day job,” the stresses of which often force me to indulge my love of wine and cheese and, on occasion, the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. (Yes, I will watch all five hours in one sitting.)

Once I jumped into the Pulse and Prejudice project, it literally (pun only slightly intended) was another full-time job. With only a finite number of hours in the day – and despite the benefits of chronic insomnia – if I were going to pursue this novel and keep our house out of foreclosure, something had to give: cooking and cleaning.

We attempted to hire maid service companies to take care of the cleaning, but two different companies on two different occasions had two different employees who stole from me! Although several friends have recommended people they consider trustworthy, I know that, with my neuroses and habit of losing things combined with this history of thievery, anytime I would misplace something, I would automatically think the maid had stolen it. Thus, our house has not been cleaned in almost a year.

My reason for telling you all of this is “Confessions of a Fan Fiction Convert” was not just my first blog for Austen Authors – it was my first blog ever. After that, my ideas dried up.
threefold. First, prepare yourself if you ever come to my home – it is filthy; secondly, stay away from the Crunchwrap Supreme at Taco Bell because it is as addictive as heroin; and lastly, creativity does not come easily to me. In fact, it is a full-time job. This might sound strange coming from a writer, but I have struggled to come up with ideas for blog topics. My blog

Cocktails with FELT LEFT OUT Director Gabrielle-Renée

Martini à la Colette: Very dry and a little dirty
Good evening, dear readers!
As my Facebook followers know, Tuesday night is PUB NIGHT; however, tonight the "pub" will be my balcony! Since I'm staying in this evening, I have a special Tuesday edition of  Cocktails with Colette, with an extra-special guest.

Tonight I am thrilled to introduce you to a talented actress, playwright, and now Director. She also happens to be an amazing muse

Please raise your glass to Gabrielle-Renée, who is here to tell you about how she became involved in her latest project, the play she will be directing next month at the Strawberry Theatre Festival in New York, Felt Left Out. Also, you can check out the behind-the-scenes video diary here
As anyone who has seen The Producers knows, plays need backers! So if you have ever "felt left out," perhaps you would be willing to show your support.
~Colette

Felt Left Out is a dramatic parody written by my good friend and fellow actor Brett Crandall. In it, the main characters from a certain PBS children’s show are reimagined from puppet to person and given real issues to deal with: addiction, sexuality, violence, and guilt.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/felt-left-out-a-new-play-at-the-strawberry-theatre-festivalSet in New York City in 1969 (the year the TV show originally aired), the play opens just before the Stonewall Riots with “Burt” and “Earney” meeting for the first time. Other introductions quickly follow suit, and the story played out upon the stages finally answers those questions we all pondered as we grew up: “Why does that guy live in a trash can?”, “What’s up with the little red guy’s voice?”, and—most importantly—“Are those two roommates or roommates?”.

My friendship with the playwright aside, after my first reading I was immediately drawn to directing this play. Gay rights is a cause I have always believed in and have worked for since my early teens. Back before the legalization of gay marriage anywhere in the States, before Prop 8 came about trying to prevent such things—hell, before Ellen DeGeneres had a talk show—I was a simple sophomore trying to get a chapter of the controversial club Gay-Straight Alliance established at my high school.

I’d helped found other clubs at the school (I knew which forms to fill out and which counselor to submit to) and had found no resistance to The Comic & Anime Club or The Arabic Club so when approached by a fellow student asking assistance in starting the GSA I naïvely thought it would be just as simple.

The End of My Season Means More Time for Writing

Well, the NFL season ended for me yesterday with the loss of my beloved New Orleans Saints. They were shut out in the first half, so I made a plea (or perhaps a bribe) on my Facebook page to get everyone to cheer for them - kind of like in Peter Pan when all the children are asked to clap to save Tinkerbell - and it was working! The Saints came back and had a chance to tie the game - twice! - but in the end, they couldn't hold on. (Due to a bet with my husband, I will now be doing all the dishes for a week.

The highlights of the season: The Saints won their first playoff game on the road in team history! They did not have a single loss at home (There's no place like Dome!). PLUS my Fantasy Football team won our league Superbowl! (And I had to beat my ex-husband TWICE to do it!)

So I have a END OF THE SAINTS SEASON SPECIAL OFFER for the first 500 to accept it: 50% OFF the PAPERBACK editions of Alicia's Possession and All My Tomorrows. Click here to see the special offer - and feel free to share with your friends.

Love and Death in the Tower with M S Spencer!

Coffee with ColetteGood morning, dear readers!
And Happy New Year!
I hope 2014 is treating you well so far. Fans of my Facebook Page (you can Like it here) know that despite ringing in the new year with a horrible cold and then falling flat on my face - busting my nose and giving myself two black eyes (and I don't mean black-eyed peas!) - 2014 is off to a good start:
  • The Saints won their FIRST playoff game on the road in team history! (Now my husband has to do the dishes for a week since he lost our bet.)
  • All My Tomorrows was named "2013 Favorite Modern Adaptation" by Austenesque Reviews.
  • AND my Fantasy Football team won the league Superbowl!!!
To share in this good fortune, tomorrow, January 8th, I will have a very special offer for all my Followers on Facebook, and I know you won't want to miss the announcement for this unprecedented limited-time special offer!

Continuing with this positive beginning, it is only appropriate that my first Coffee caller of the year is one of my favourite visitors: the amazing M.S. Spenser, a fellow Secret Cravings Publishing author who visited with us last summer to talk about Lapses of Memory, which captured me as soon as I read the description (and I STILL highly-recommend her novel Artful Dodging - also available on Amazon and B&N).

This morning she joins us to introduce her HOT NEW RELEASE, a fascinating romantic suspense inspired by true events: The Mason's Mark: Love and Death in the Tower. Once again she has included an (adult!) excerpt to tantalize us, but I think you'll agree this novel is not to be missed!
~Colette

The Mason's Mark: Love & Death in the Tower

http://store.secretcravingspublishing.com/index.php?main_page=book_info&cPath=4&products_id=800The Mason's Mark arose in part out of a true story. Starting in the 1940s an Italian named Licio Gelliembarked on a lifetime of bizarre scams and crimes. Alternately linked to rightists and leftists, he bilked or used people from Italian politicians, to the Nazis, the Communists, the CIA, even to Juan Peron, dictator of Argentina. His exploits cross the globe and spanned four decades. At last check, he was still alive, in his nineties and writing poetry from prison. In 1996 he was even nominated for the Nobel prize in literature.

Gelli is most famous for founding a Masonic lodge called Propaganda Due, a renegade group that was first dissolved, then reinstated, then erased by the Grand Orient de Italia. He had ensnared many prominent Italians into P2, which ultimately led to several huge scandals. He is the model for the shadowy puppetmaster in my new romantic suspense novel The Mason's Mark: Love and Death in the Tower (an Old Town Romance).

Here's the story:
In both the best and worst first day at work ever, docent Claire Wilding meets the man of her dreams, but her carefully rehearsed guided tour of the George Washington National Masonic Memorial falls apart when she discovers a dead body. Together with Detective Ernest Angle, she's drawn into a dark world of black ops and Italian renegade masons. Also cloaked in mystery is her new love Gideon Bliss. A George Washington expert, he haunts the Memorial, his manner evasive. What is his secret? Claire fears she'll fall in love with him only to learn he's a thief or even a murderer.

Juggling two eccentric mothers, an inquisitive sister, and an increasingly smitten Ernest, Claire must find answers to a complex web of intrigue, including which black ops agent to trust, whether our first president strayed, and if she and Gideon will ever be together.
