Bloodsucker Races with Ciaran Dwynvil

Good morning, dear readers! We are starting the week off right with a Monday edition of Coffee with Colette. I know I complain about my "soul-sucking day job" regularly, but I actually had to work an hour late on Friday! Now that's just wrong. So to kick this week off on the right foot, Ciaran Dwynvil - the bard of gay erotic paranormal fantasy himself - is here to get our pulses racing even if you <gasp!> drink decaf!                              ~Colette

Thank you, Colette, for having me as your guest today. I'm very excited to be here to tell you about my newest gay erotic paranormal fantasy, In Blue Poppy Fields. The book will please not only all fans of Belial, the Prince of Trickery, the Lord of Lust and the Antilight... aka Guardian Demon, but all readers who love vampires.

Though... perhaps not all, as vampire stories differ greatly. Some have gloomy, horror atmosphere, some are full of blood and violence, still others brim with dark sensuality. How should you know ours would be to your liking? Apart from reading a sample chapter on Amazon or Smashwords to get a feel of the tale, you can learn about various aspects of a vampire's life in our world during the In Blue Poppy Fields release tour

Let's first take a look at the book and then we will move on to our topic for today:  Races of Bloodsuckers

In Blue Poppy Fields In Blue Poppy Fields Blurb:

A victim to another man's cruelty, talented and beautiful theater actor Adhemar Lebeau learned not to trust and not to love anybody but himself. Falsely accused of his master's murder, he has to accept assistance of mysterious Count Sanyi Arany to later discover his savior is a vampire. Forced both by a fatal illness and aftershocks of torture experienced during his unjust imprisonment, Adhemar agrees to the only possible cure. Rebirth.
Healed in body but not in mind, he guards his independence, free will and heart. He is not able to give love, only the fulfillment of lust. Yet, satiation of sensuous longing is not enough for his Sire and he knows it. When an eerie malady strikes and seems to deplete Sanyi's life energy for unknown reasons, Adhemar understands his fears and agrees to keep a street boy, Reyach, as a pet for both of them in hope it will soothe the unspoken worries.
Out of necessity he finds himself in the role of the only hunter in their company, and out of attachment he accepts the responsibility readily. Indulgence in blood and carnal pleasures fill his nights and vampiric powers give him the feeling of safety. Until the evening when he carelessly falls prey to High Demon Belial's plays that quickly turn into more than either of them has bargained for.
In spite of a hard start, Adhemar feels burning urge deep in his heart and no matter how much he denies it, the cause of the strange sensation is a budding seed of affection brought to life by the insufferable demon. But letting Adhemar learn to love somebody other than him is not what seemingly innocent Reyach plans.

So, the blurb only revealed the book is about vampires. But what kind of vampires? Read on and learn about the different bloodsucker races inhabiting our world.

Both Sanyi and Adhemar belong to the most known race: the true vampires of the night. Only its members can be destroyed by sunrays. That might sound unfortunate. However, this race is also blessed with powers the other races do not normally possess. One is the ability to fly, another is the gift of Rebirth, and the last is mind-to-mind communication with others of their kind and also with other immortals once a vampire gets beyond the beginner steps in telepathy. Some are naturally more gifted in this skill, some are less; but all of them are able to communicate on this level even if with different eloquence. All of them can also read thoughts of mortals. In some circumstances it can be a life saving ability, very much like the faculty for flying. But if an image of a bat crossed your mind now, let it go. True vampires of the night do not shift their shape into animal forms. Their flight is a sort of levitation. Very elegant but relatively fast if they so choose.

The far less common race of bloodsuckers are Hunters. Hunters are warm-blooded vampires who aren't harmed by sunshine. Hunters don't necessarily need blood to sustain themselves. They can feed on meat as well. They do not typically indulge in telepathy, and if they do learn to

communicate in this way, their lines tend to be very simple. More like individual words tossed together without regards to grammar. While it is an ancient race, it is now almost extinct and pure-bred Hunters are rarely if ever met. If they are, members of mortal races don't live through an encounter to talk about them. Only strygas are an exception, though even they can lose their lives to these ferocious, extremely fast and strong predators. However, Hunters due to their low numbers and due to the fact that they cannot Turn anybody often consort intimately with strygas as these can bear their children, and for this reason they are sometimes spared. If leaving them almost drained can be called mercy.

    Children born from such a
union still possess extreme speed and strength. But their mothers usually teach them to tone both down to remain safe in their communities. For the same reason they teach them to accept the food of mortals though these cross-breed vampires can develop a taste for blood later in their lives. But even if they do, they are not as dependent on this source of nourishment as the true vampires of the night are. Their cuspids lost their sharpness and the ability to lengthen and retract due to the mortal part of their bloodlines and so they often use a sharp blade to open the veins of their prey. If they don't, their attack is far more painful for the victim than an assault of a pure-bred Hunter or the true vampire is. When it comes to the skills of telepathy: they can only read thoughts and memories of mortals while they take their blood. Their own thoughts and memories can be revealed in the same way if they are fortunate enough to have a partner who shares their understanding for blood. It is not always the case though as they can choose to live with mortals.

But they can also accept another cross-breed vampire or even a true vampire of the night as their sexual partner. Their females can bear the children of the true vampires of the night though it doesn't happen too often. If such a child is born however, he or she will be truly exceptional in the world of bloodsuckers. Such a child will have the abilities to fly, to communicate mind to mind, to give Rebirth. He or she will also be able to sustain daylight as long as clothes and shadows provide a shield, and the food of mortals while it won't give much nourishment can save his or her life in circumstances when blood is not accessible.

Physical aging for any cross-breed vampire ceases around the age of thirty years. After that their bodies don't change further.

Both pure races and the cross-breed varieties possess extraordinary strength and speed. All vampires regardless their race are practically immortal unless they are decapitated or burned to ashes. Any other attempt to destroy them is doomed to fail.

The above mentioned races and cross-breeds form the vast majority of bloodsuckers that can be met in our world. However, the list is not complete without lost souls, blood mages and finally a cross-breed between faecubi and true vampires. To cover their characteristics would demand another blog post, so maybe another time.

Guardian Demon Series In Blue Poppy Fields Book Release Tour

We spoke about bloodsucker races today but there isn't a paragraph or a page in the book itself which would cover the topic in the way we have just done here. So instead I will give you a peek into a mind to mind communication power:

“You speak in my mind,” Adhemar murmured into uneasy quietness and Sanyi couldn't bear it any more. He had had no intention to offend his companion, nor did he know how to stop what was happening. He could only turn his hands palms toward his favorite in a wordless plea. But Adhemar shook his head slightly, thus stopping his self-beating and asked: “Can you hear me in the same way?”
“I-I don't think so,” Sanyi stuttered, caught off guard by the question. “You either do or you don't, Sanyi,” Adhemar smirked out of the sudden. “There is nothing to ponder.”
“I have just...,” the line had been doomed from the first word. He didn't even know what he wanted to say. He only couldn't allow the silence to return. “You just haven't tried it, Maker mine,” Adhemar goaded but most of the tension had already left the tone of his voice and Sanyi relaxed under its returning softer tones, admitting the truth in his companion's words by a small nod.
“Then try it now.” The challenge came too fast and too unexpectedly. Sighing, he protested: “I don't want to...”
“Nonsense, you want to and I'd rather know if you can do it or not. Try it.” Resistance would be a lost battle. Adhemar wasn't going to back down, that much was obvious and Sanyi realized it would be better for both of them to gain the certainty. He would acquiesce. But he had never... he had just not heard... his Sire hadn't taught him... “Icicles?” he breathed and his eyes widened in genuine surprise.
